In Ellie’s own words she ‘felt so happy, filled with joy’ when she received her invitation to take part in the Dreamflight trip in 2019.
Due to having Cerebral Palsy, she had been attending physiotherapy sessions in Northern Ireland since she was 10 months old; up to 3 times a week. This became even more challenging for Ellie and her family when major surgery was needed in 2016. At that point, they had to commit to intensive long-term rehabilitation. Having worked exceptionally hard and demonstrated her determination and commitment (even on the most challenging days) her Physio Jennifer felt that she deserved a lovely reward and nominated her for Dreamflight.
Ellie’s Mum Pamela said: ‘I knew she would have an amazing time – a trip of a lifetime with a group of her peers where she could totally be herself and not feel like she was too slow or have to put on a brave face when tiredness set in’.

Although initially worried about leaving her family and dog behind, Ellie looked forward to the trip and especially swimming with dolphins! What followed was 10 days of fun with her roommate Sofie who was ‘kind, nice’ and ‘a perfect match’. Ellie challenged herself to ride the scariest rollercoasters and has not stopped talking about it since coming home!
When asked if she felt different following the trip, Ellie said: ‘I felt like I had been opened to a new world. I had met children way worse off to me and together we challenged our mental or physical disabilities. I proved to myself that I could do anything.’

Pamela added: ‘Ellie got so much out of being away with a group of her peers who needed support and encouragement in the same way as she did. It was a real confidence booster with rides, parties, swimming, fun, sun and laughter. If your child gets the chance don’t let it pass by!…We almost said no [due to school exams], but I have never been so glad that we said yes.’
Thanks to Ellie and her family for allowing us to share her story, to Jennifer for nominating her and to volunteer escort Kerryann and the Scooby Doo Group for giving Ellie a fantastic time!
