Charity challenges have, for the past 20 years or so, been popular ways for charities to raise funds through challenging their supporters to achieve 'goals'. At its simplest, a fundraising challenge works by setting an individual or a group of people a physical and challenging task - such as climbing a mountain or cycling a certain route - and those who accept the challenge then raise funds through sponsorship to cover the operating costs of the challenge, as well as also raising funds for the organising charity as well. Therefore, challenges are both rewarding for the charity, but also for the participant - as they get to see some amazing places, a sense of having achieved something arduous, and knowing that they have supported a good cause all at the same time.
With Different challenges,
you not only get the sense of achievement which
comes from (1)achieving the task set before you
and (2) supporting your charity, with Different
Challenge there is a third very important
element - you also get involved with a community
project in the host country, supporting the development
objectives of local people. So, for example, you
might ‘get handy in the Andes’ by trekking
the Inca Trail and seeing the amazing sights of
Machu Picchu, but instead of just heading home
afterwards, you then get set to work helping
with essential refurbishments on a local school.
Further to this, as we always try to work with
local people, the porters we use on our Inca Trail
trek are likely to be amongst the parents of the
children whose school you will be re-furbishing.
So, with our challenges, you get to see amazing
places, do amazing things, and help amazing people – at
home and abroad. With a Different Challenge’ – everyone’s
a winner!
If you want to
participate in one of Different's challenges,
the first thing to do is decide which one. Every
challenge has a different project, but many of them
involve refurbishing buildings used by schools, hospitals
and orphanages. However, some of the challenges involve
environmental work. The important thing to remember
is, whatever the project, it is something which local
people have identified as being important to them,
and therefore, we are helping those who show us hospitality
in their country to help build better futures
for themselves.To
